PETCO and the PETCO Foundation have stepped up to help rescue some very special animals in need and find them safe, loving homes as soon as possible. Beginning Feb. 9 , 22 PETCO stores throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area will have available, through Wild Rescue Inc. of Texas , more than 2,000 recently rescued animals for adoption.

A 12-year-old Avondale boy who attended a fire-education class over the weekend used the knowledge to save his family's pets and home Monday morning after a fire broke out in the laundry room, authorities said. The boy's parents already had left for work and he was preparing to leave for school when he heard the smoke detector about 7:45 a.m., Avondale Fire-Rescue spokesman Art Snapp said. The boy searched the house and saw smoke coming from the dryer in the laundry room.

PET pooches fought it out tooth and claw last night in the animal alternative to the Super Bowl — the PUPPY BOWL. Straight from their shelters, 43 playful rescue puppies battled it out for two hours on a miniature recreation of an American football field for the title of MVP (Most Valuable Puppy). The sixth annual canine competition was aired at the same time as the Super Bowl XLIV in Miami and featured just as much action.  

The 999 call came in just after ­midnight. With ­Saturday sliding into ­Sunday, the streets of Sheffield ricocheted with the sounds of boozy ­bravado. On the line was the landlady of the Scarbrough Arms, a quiet pub in Upperthorpe, a nondescript suburb off the inner ring road.  

The East Hill Animal Hospital is moving to 805 E. Gadsden St. in Pensacola, next to Pensacola Pet Resort. Both are owned by Dr. Laura Tonetti Hall, who is pleased about the move from 300 E.
